Saturday, June 11 saw our second event of the year at NHMS. What started out as a little drizzle quickly turned into steady rain, but that didn’t hamper the 25 drivers who came out to play. We tried a new course configuration, reversing our usual start and finish locations, giving drivers a much longer approach to the first turn. Feedback was very positive even though the rain kept entry speeds extremely low. We will definitely use this layout again in the dry.
While most of the day was pretty uneventful, excitement picked up late in the afternoon where one of the drivers lost a wheel on course and came down on the rear brake assembly. The culprit, an aftermarket spacer failed under the stress and sheered the wheel studs completely off. The Drift Spot “Emergency Crew” performed flawlessly, getting the course back open again in under 15 minutes! As a side note, in the future, we will be checking for spacers and recommending that drivers remove them for the day. They simply cannot stand up to the stress of drifting.
All in all, it was a great day for drivers. Drifting in the rain really helps hone your technique and makes things much easier for the beginners. Our next event is 4 weeks away on July 9th. Registration opens this week, so if you missed this event, you won’t want to miss the next one! See you all in July!
